The Friends received notification that REI had awarded a $5,000 grant to our organization. The application was submitted early this year in response to an invitation from the national REI office in Seattle. This invitation was in response to a nomination from local REI employees who were aware of Friends activities on behalf of Pheasant Branch Conservancy. Part of the grant will be used to map vegetation in the newly acquired parcel on Highland Way. The Friends will use the grant to purchase Global Positioning Units and train volunteers in their use. High school students will map discrete vegetation areas on the entire site so that the City of Middleton and Friends can develop plans for restoring the land as the John C. Bock Urban Forest. A public information campaign will address a problem which has become apparent as the number of bicyclists in the Conservancy has increased. Using REI grant monies, the Friends will purchase bike racks and place them near sensitive areas that are off-limits to bikes. Information on erosion caused by bicycles will also be distributed to area cyclists. The City's trail stewards and neighborhood associations are asking cyclists to stay on designated rails in the Conservancy and use them responsibly. Please visit the folks at REI and thank them for their support!
