Pheasant Branch Springs

Did you know that the Pheasant Branch Springs discharge an average of 1,760 gallons per minute?! In just one day, the water from these springs could fill 70 backyard pools, or supply 30 households with water for an entire year.

The image above shows the recharge area for the Pheasant Branch springs, modeled by the USGS. Precipitation that enters the ground water in the highlighted areas may eventually make its way out through the springs.

Herb Garn, hydrologist and member of the FOPBC, shares his deep understanding of the springs: the hydrology, the importance of this spring water to the wetland and to Lake Mendota, and threats to the springs from land use changes and development.
